사랑하는 나의 거트루드에게: 편지 뭉치를 한 번에 보낸다. 대부분 (후원자들에게 보내는) "감사 편지"들이니 네가 좀 봉해줄 수 있겠니? 네가 읽어볼 수 있도록 몇 통은 열어두었지만, 다시 보낼 때는 반드시 봉인해서 보내야 한다. 몽고메리 워드(Montgomery Ward, 당시 백화점) 측에 너에게 6달러 41센트를 지급하라고 요청해 두었다. 우리가 사용할 수 없었던 물건 몇 가지는 다시 돌려보낸다.
지난 12월 12일에 네가 쓴 편지가 이번 주에 도착했단다. 네가 지은 시와 그 시에 붙인 곡, '가장 아름다우신 분(The Altogether Lovely)'도 잘 받았어. 모두 정말 고맙구나. 그런데 너와 월터가 크리스마스를 함께 보낸다는 건 어떻게 된 일이니? 그저 친구 사이로 지내는 거니?
편지를 너무 많이 썼더니 무척 피곤하구나. 이미 쓴 편지들을 네가 많이 읽을 수 있을 테니, 여기에는 길게 쓰지 않아도 되겠지. 혹시 틀린 글자를 발견하면 네가 좀 고쳐주렴.
쓸 수 있는 시간이 너무 적어서 급하게 써야만 했단다. 나는 월요일 정오에 전주(Chunju)로 떠나서 2주 동안 머물 예정이야. 그래서 지금 옷가지와 공과 교재(lesson sheets) 등을 준비해야 한단다.
이곳엔 눈이 많이 내렸어. 블레어(Blair) 선교사네 가족은 오늘 오후에 썰매를 타러 나갔단다. 벨(Bell) 박사님의 말을 빌려서 말이야. 거트루드, 편지 자주 하렴. 네 마음속에 있는 모든 이야기를 우리에게 서스럼없이 들려다오. 하나님께서 너를 도우실 것이란다. 나는 그것을 확신하며 신앙 안에서 너를 위해 기도하고 있다. 또한 주님의 뜻이 이루어질 것이며, 그분께서 행하시는 일은 언제나 옳다는 것을 나는 안다. 주님의 이름을 찬양하자꾸나.

My Dearest Gertrude: I am sending a bunch of letters, mostly "Thank you mam" letters will you please seal them. I am leaving some of them open so you can read them but be sure and seal them before you send them on. I am asking Montgomery Ward to pay you $6.41. I am sending back some things which we could not use.
Your letter of Dec. 12 came this week also the poem you wrote & the music to it the poem "The Altogether Lovely" thanks for them all. How is it you & Walter were going to spend Christmas together, just as friends?
Have written so many letters I am very tired & I can't write much since you can read a lot of the ones I have written I won't need to write much. If you find any mistakes correct them.
I only have such a little time to write & have had to write in a hurry. I leave Monday noon for Chunju to be gone two weeks, & now I must get my clothes ready & the lesson sheets etc.
There is a big snow. The Blairs were out in a sled this P.M. They have Dr. Bell's horse. Write often Gertrude & don't hesitate to write us all that is in your heart. God will help you I know that I pray for you in faith & I know His will will be done & what He does is right. Praise His Name.
